Abuja, March 14, 2024: The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, has said that the World Trade Organisation (WTO) was supporting Nigeria in improving quality of its export products.
Uzoka-Anite made this known at the end of the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday in Abuja.
She said that the WTO has offered to further assist the country in six key areas towards easing doing business for local and foreign investors.
She said that the body was assisting in the cowpea and sesame seeds production, packaging and preservation in order to meet export standards.
“This is an important support because Nigeria has been losing in terms of rejection of her goods for export. The WTO and World Bank is offering to make farmers aware of the standard required to bring in profits for these goods,” she said.
The Minister said that the body was collaborating in the area of digital trade, trade intelligence unit in the ministry, cotton support, women entrepreneurship as well as customs support.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, said that the Council has approved the leveraging of the NICOMSAT and Galaxy Backbone, to improve connectivity in all the local government areas of the country.
He said because of the significance of the project, funding supports have been offered from the African Development Bank and World Bank for its success.
Similarly, Tijani said that a collaboration between his ministry and that of Defence has been agreed to enhance the use of technology in fighting crimes and criminalities across the country.
Sen. Dave Umahi, Minister of Works, also disclosed the approval of council for the Obajana – Benin Road dualisation as well as the Lagos – Shagamu alternative road, adding that the Lagos – Shagamu road would be tooled.
