In a post on its X Handle on Friday, the Nigerian Army said the dissidents, armed with AK-47 rifles and riding in two Lexus vehicles and motorbikes, launched a surprise attack on the town, opening fire at troops engaged in internal security operations.

It said the troops swiftly and decisively responded and countered the attack, neutralising unconfirmed numbers of the attackers, while others fled the scene with gunshot wounds, as traces of blood were seen along their escape route.

According to the post, one soldier paid the ultimate price in the line of duty, while two others sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will continue to confront all threats to peace and stability in the region.

“The bravery and dedication of our troops in the face of danger are testimonies of their unwavering commitment to protecting the people and communities,” it added.

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC)1 Division, Maj- Gen. Mayirenso Saraso, has restated the need for training of troops as part of efforts to curb the security challenges facing the country.

Saraso gave the Charge on Thursday in Kano at the end of a four-day Inter-Brigade combat proficiency competition of Corporal and below soldiers.

He also challenged troops to remain professional and always deploy their skills in combating the security challenges bedeviling the country.

Represented by Commander, 3 Brigade, Brig.- Gen Musa Sadiq, said that the need for enhanced and qualitative training in the army was more needed now than ever as a result of the contemporary security challenges bedeviling the nation.

According to him, the Nigerian Army continues to forge ahead and training remains the best welfare to the personnel.

“The conduct of this competition is a reaffirmation of the premium 1 Division places on effective training.

“The Division will continue to implement our training schedules in line with Army head quarters training Directives.

“Accordingly, new skills will continue to be acquired, areas of observed weaknesses will be straightened and our strength will be consolidated,” he said.

Saraso commended the participants for their hard work, urging them not to relent and try to do more in the next competition
