Old N200, N500, N1,000 notes remain legal tender – Supreme Court

The Supreme Court ruling which mandates that funds intended for Local Governments must be disbursed directly, bypassing the previously existing joint accounts managed by state governments, aligns perfectly with our long-standing advocacy for local government autonomy and underscores the vital importance of financial independence for effective grassroots development, the TSF has reminisced.

The Tinubu Stakeholders Forum (TSF), therefore, says the Supreme Court decision affirming the autonomy of local governments is a monumental step towards reinforcing grassroots development.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Ahmad Sajoh and Secretary Josiah Afolabi, the group wholeheartedly applauded the Supreme Court’s landmark decision ordering the Federal Government to immediately commence the direct payment of funds to Local Governments.

The group argued that it would enhance operational efficiency and accountability for local governments.

“In our view, it is a pivotal ruling which signifies a monumental step towards reinforcing grassroots democracy and fostering of local government administration across Nigeria.

“We recognize that the Apex Court’s decision will significantly enhance the operational efficiency and accountability of the third tier of government.

“By ensuring that funds are directly channelled to Local Governments, we can guarantee that resources are utilized precisely where they are needed the most, thereby accelerating development projects and improving service delivery at the community level.

“This ruling effectively curtails the undue influence of state governments over Local Government finances, promoting a more transparent and equitable distribution of resources.

“For us, a particularly groundbreaking aspect of the ruling is the outlawing of caretaker committees, which have long been used to undermine democratic processes at the local level.”

TSF also gave an insight into the implications of the judgement on local government administration in the country.

“So, the Court’s decision to withhold funds from councils operating under such caretaker arrangements is a decisive step in upholding constitutional governance.

“It is telling that, as pointed out by Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, the state has only held local government elections twice since 1999. “This ruling sends a clear message that the era of undemocratic practices at the local government level is over. This era is bound to bring about a new dispensation of regular and fair elections that thrust up local leaders who will be a true representative of their communities’ will.

“This groundbreaking ruling will not only foster economic growth but also bolster public confidence in local governance. And now that they have been empowered with direct access to funds, Local Governments can now prioritize critical areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security.

“This newfound financial autonomy is essential for addressing the unique needs of each community, driving sustainable development, and enhancing the overall quality of life for all Nigerians.

“We therefore call on all relevant government agencies to iron out any grey area in the judgment and swiftly implement the Supreme Court’s directive. The prompt and efficient execution of this ruling is crucial to realizing its full benefits and ensuring that Local Governments are fully equipped to meet their constitutional responsibilities.

“We extend our deepest gratitude to the Supreme Court for upholding this long sought-after principles of justice and equity. This historic decision represents a transformative moment for local governance in Nigeria, “it added.
