:Edu at UNGA78 urges UN support for Nigeria’s Poverty crises

Abuja, Sept. 19, 2023: Dr Betta Edu, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has urged the United Nations to support federal government’s efforts to achieve durable solutions to humanitarian crises.

Edu disclosed this during a high-level meeeting with Mr Martin Griffiths, the coordinator under UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief.

A statement by her Media aide Mr Rasheed Zubair, on Tuesday in Abuja said, the meeting held at the sidelines of the ongoing 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) in New York.

The Minister sought the support of UN for the presidential Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund.

According to the statement, the request was graciously approved by the UN and assured the minister of their full commitment.

The statement added that, issues discussed during the high-level meeting centred on systematic and long-term response to Nigeria’s poverty and humanitarian crises under the SDGs target.

She called for collaboration between the UN and the government of Nigeria to provide durable solutions to humanitarian crises emergencies in the country.

Edu also briefed President Tinubu on the need to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs) and its implications to Nigeria ahead of his Address before the General Assembly.

The Minister who shared her Ministry’s action plan to the President advocated the need for resource mobilization.

She also joined the Nigerian first lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, at a side event to re-awaken Nigerians in Diaspora on the need to support the federal government’s renewed hope agenda.

According to her, ‘”Nigerians in Diaspora must get involved, help to rebuild Nigeria’s economy and Nigerians out of poverty.
