The Democratic Front (TDF) has commended the calm disposition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the threat by US President Donald Trump to attack Nigeria over the misleading allegations of genocide against Christians in the country.
In a statement signed by its Chairman, Mallam Danjuma Muhammad and Secretary, Chief Wale Adedayo, the group described the threat as provocative but hailed the manner President Tinubu is going about addressing the issues.
The statement read: “It is very exciting to note that the Nigerian President is handling the vexatious provocations from the American President with the maturity, care, and cautiousness of a diplomatic statesman, in a manner that will not hurt the relationship between the two countries.
”We are aware that the US President Donald Trump failed to compare notes with his Nigerian counterpart on the veracity or otherwise of the claim of genocide before he lashed out at Nigeria, in the most uncivil manner that is unbecoming of the President of a first-world democracy.
”Without doubt, we believe that the civilised and friendly approach which President Tinubu has adopted on the matter will open windows of opportunities for diplomatic engagements that will lead to the amicable resolution of all contending issues.
”President Tinubu’s endeavours towards defeating terrorism in Nigeria are common knowledge to everyone, including the US government, which incidentally has been a partner in the supply of large-scale military hardware.
”For the avoidance of doubt, the effort of the Tinubu administration in addressing the challenges of insecurity has recorded remarkable success in the last two years.
”We know that most of the flashpoints for incessant terror attacks have enjoyed relative peace and stability, while intense efforts by the Armed Forces to neutralise ISWAP and Boko Haram have limited their threats and heinous activities to areas within the fringes of Nigeria’s borders in the North East.
”The introduction of non-kinetic measures in combating insecurity is also succeeding, through the establishment of government presence in ungoverned spaces.
”Similarly, the surge in annual food production is equally a confirmation of the non-kinetic steps taken by the government to ensure peaceful coexistence for normal farming activities to succeed.
”The exposure of the fallacy and inaccuracy in the data on which the US President predicated his decision to redesignate Nigeria a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) by both the Independent Media and Policy Initiative (IMPI) and the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), was a clear evidence That Trump was deliberately misled to behave the way he did by some fraudulent local and foreign groups.
”In our opinion, President Tinubu’s response to Trump’s position is a reflection of a cautious diplomacy that prioritises the cordial relationship between Nigeria and the United States, above the unnecessary controversy.
”We are convinced that the Tinubu administration’s approach would succeed.”
TDF thanked the President for his cautious approach and urged Nigerians to see the wisdom in his reaction to the sensitive issue.
