Buhari removes Baru, appoints Kyari as NNPC boss

President Muhammadu Buhari appointed a new Group Managing Director for the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The new GMD is Mr Mele Kyari who would replace the Group Managing Director, Mr. Maitanti Baru.

Until his appointment Kyari was Group General Manager, Crude Oil Marketing Division.

Buhari also approved the appointment of seven new Chief Operating Officers. All the appointments are with effect from July 8, 2019.

Other appointees are Mr Roland Onoriode Ewubare (South-South), Chief Operating Officer, Upstream; Mr Mustapha Yinusa Yakubu (North Central) – Chief Operating Officer Refining and Petrochemicals; and Mr. Yusuf Usman (North East) – Chief Operating Officer, Gas and Power.

Others are, Ms Lawrencia Nwadiabuwa Ndupu (South East), Chief Operating Officer Ventures; Mr. Umar Isa Ajiya (North West), Chief Financial Officer; Mr Adeyemi Adetunji (South West), Chief Operating Officer, Downstream; and Mr Farouk Garba Said (North West) – Chief Operating Officer, Corporate Services.

Mr Ndu Ughamadu, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs, said in Abuja on Thursday that Buhari directed that new GMD and Chief Operating Officers to work with the current occupiers of the various offices till 7th July, 2019.

They should ensure a smooth transition on 8th July 2019 when their appointments would take effect to ensure a smooth transition with the exception Mr Farouk Garba Said (North West), who is replacing a retiring Chief Operating Officer, effective from 28th June, 2019.

Kyari, a geologist, doubled since 13th May, 2018, as Nigeria’s National Representative to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, OPEC.
