Sydney, Oct. 17, 2023: Workers at Chevron Australia’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities are expected to resume their strike on Thursday, even though talks between the unions and the energy giant failed in the deal-finalisation phase.
The Offshore Alliance (OA), a coalition of the Australian Workers’ Union and the Maritime Union of Australia, announced on Sunday on social media.
It announced that 410 members voted in a secret ballot with 91 per cent support of kicking off a protected industrial action (PIA) on Thursday.
In a statement on the industrial action, a spokesperson from Chevron Australia expressed extreme disappointment over the voting result.
Together, Chevron Australia’s Gorgon and Wheatstone projects have the capacity to produce 24.5 million tons of LNG per year.
Since Sept. 8, around 500 union members’ at all three West Coast facilities have commenced an industrial action.
This could threaten seven per cent of the world’s LNG supply, according to the Australian Financial Review.
