Abuja, June 18, 2023: The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says the deployment of technology has helped it to combat smuggling and that it would leave no stone unturned to uncover the antics of smugglers.

Its spokesman, Chief Superintendent of Customs, Mr Abdullahi Maiwada, said on Sunday in Abuja that Customs personnel had been uncovering smugglers’ antics in spite of their sophistication.

“Smuggling is a very dangerous venture that must not be allowed to thrive as it affects health and other aspects of citizens’ lives,’’ he said.

Maiwada added that in its quest to protect the health of Nigerians and ensure adequate security, the service evolved strategies to beat smugglers.

He told NAN that trained personnel had been able to discover smuggled goods no matter how discretely concealed.

“The Nigeria Customs Service is not resting on its oars in nabbing smugglers and will not tolerate infractions by traders,’’ he stressed.

He said the NCS had put measures in place to check non-compliance and other forms of sharp practices by traders.

“Traders should always make genuine declarations and pay appropriate Customs duties,’’ he said.

Maiwada assured that the service would continue to carry out its mandate of facilitating trade, generating revenue and ensuring safety of Nigerians.
